What do I need to do?

I am continuing my course

If you have already applied for support for an earlier year of your current course, you do not need to contact Student Finance Direct or your Local Authority (LA) unless you have not received a form by the application deadlines noted in “The Application Process”. You will be contacted automatically with details about how to apply for the coming year.

You must submit an application for every year you are in higher education. However, you will not be required to submit evidence each year unless there has been a change to your circumstances, for example, your household income or your marital status.

I am changing my course or institution

If you wish to transfer courses, you should talk to your Institution and LA as soon as possible. You may be able to transfer the support you receive towards your fees to another course.

I am leaving my course of study

If you leave your course early, you may affect your entitlement to financial support if you return to higher education in the future. Your student loan will enter repayment in the April following your last date of attendance.

I am returning to a new course of higher education after a break in my studies

You should contact your LA. You will still be able to apply for a Student Loan, but you may not be entitled to financial support towards your tuition fees, or an higher education grant if you have previously received financial assistance for your studies from public funds. However there are exceptions and your personal circumstances will be taken into account.
